This opportunity was given to me by a partnership between my university (Princeton University) and Elective Africa. I worked in Levolosi Health Center, a public clinic in Arusha, mainly in the minor theater, where I assisted and later oversaw other performing minor procedures such as cleaning/dressing wounds, sutures, and circumcisions. The doctor in charge of the theater, Dr. Jonas, was very informative and kind, and instructed us in basic skills such as changing dressings and wrapping wounds at first, and later more complicated tasks such as assisting directly in circumcisions. A Trip worth the spend

Elective Africa allowed me to make a real difference in Arusha. I was able to shadow in many different areas and do many things I never could have done back home. Volunteering in Tanzania was rewarding in many ways. This experience has changed me in more ways than one and I will remember it for the rest of my life. I highly suggest volunteering abroad and doing so with Elective Africa.

My Pre-PA Experience

My experience in Kenya was absolutely amazing and I would go back in a heart beat. I went to Mombasa and worked in Coast Provincial General Hospital. It is a larger hospital and you have a lot more opportunity. I was worried when I first found the program that I would maybe just be observing or something. That was definitely not the case at all. A Once in a Lifetime Experience

1. What are the main reasons as to why you choose Kenya as your destination of choice?

In my opinion, having clinical attachment in developing countries is the best experience in medical school. The health care system and diseases in developing countries are entirely different from that in developed countries. It would be the best chance for me to learn tropical disease and HIV related diseases in Kenya. If I have elective in other countries e.g. England, I could not appreciate the difference of health care facilities and resources between Hong Kong and developing countries

An Invaluable Experience

My time at the Mbagathi District Hospital in Nairobi was a challenging but enriching experience. I split my time between the paediatric and newborn units and the hands-on experience I received was invaluable. An elective in Kenya

When I decided to go to Mombasa, Kenya with Elective Africa, I had three years of medical training under my belt – one of which was clinical work. I was excited by the possibility of experiencing a culture much different from my own, and being able to provide care to patients in a limited resource environment.
