6 Day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Climb Itinerary

Mt. Kilimanjaro has 3 volcanic cones and is the highest mountain in Africa at 5,895 meters above sea level. This Marangu route is the most popular and the easiest route. It is gradual and steady therefore making it less painful on the trek. It also offers a shorter acclimatization period. This route is also known as the coca cola route as its accommodation is in the huts, which also serves beverages. The trek begins in the south east of the mountain at Marangu gate & the descent takes the same route. It has the best trail in the rain forest combined with and great views of the Mawenzi. It is preferred by those want to spend less time on the mountain & do not mind crowds

  • Personal Gear like sleeping bags, which you can bring with you or rent from the Park, they cost from $10-$25, there is a list of Gear attached to this itinerary that will guide you on what you need to bring.

Itinerary
Day 1:First Day of Trekking
  • Picked up from the Hotel or Arusha at 8:00 AM
  • After Breakfast and you will be driven to the gate of Marangu where the trek begins. The climb starts at Marangu Gate (1829m), followed by a 5-7 hours walk through the fast climbing rainforest to reach Mandara Hut (2700m), close by Maundi Crater.
  • Dinner and overnight in the hut.
Day 2: Second Day of Trekking
  • You will follow the gently ascending path through the open Alpine Meadow. The altitude begins to make you tread slowly: "pole" is the order of the day while enjoying the flora and the magnificent view. The path takes you through giant heather as you make your way up to the moorland. Some portions of the trail are steep but you have a great view of Mawenzi peak.
  • Picnic lunch on the way.
  • The Horombo hut accommodates about 120 people. This is where you will meet people coming down from their summit attempts.
  • Dinner and overnight in the hut.
  • Horombo Hut (3720m) is reached within 5-7 hours walk.
Day 3: Third Day of Trekking
  • One extra day and night at Horombo Hut for acclimatization.
  • At this point, if one feels strong enough are at liberty to continue with the hike and shorten the number of days spent on the Mountain.
  • All meals and overnight in the hut.
Day: Fourth Day of Trekking
  • After a good night’s rest, you will continue, past the last giant Lobelias and Proteas, and move on the lunar landscape of the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi.
  • Picnic lunch on the way.
  • Dinner and overnight in the hut.
  • Kibo Hut (4703m) is reached in 5-6 hours.
Day 5: Fifth Day of Trekking
  • The climb for the summit starts at around 12:00 am. For about 6 hours you will be climbing the steepest and most demanding part, zigzags back and forth along a gravel path the route to Gilman's Point, 5685m on the crater rim. Less than 2 hours are then taken to reach Uhuru Peak at 5895m, the highest point in Africa.
  • From here you will descend going straight down to Horombo Hut, where you'll spend the night.
Day 6: Sixth Day of Trekking; Ascent to Summit (19430 ft.)/ Descent
  • The day is spent descending to Marangu Gate.
  • The descent to the gate will take approximately 5 hours and climbers usually arrive before noon. Upon arrival at the gate climbers will be rewarded with certificates attesting their success on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
  • Transfer to Arusha town for overnight accommodation.
