Our healthcare institution partners require that each participant doing an elective, volunteer or pre-health placement to contribute a fee, which is either paid by the organization planning a placement or by the individual participant. The hospital fee paid by each participant goes towards the advancement of the facilities in terms of resources that they need. This fee is different from the additional fee that Elective Africa pays its mentors for supervising the clients.
The Elective Africa fee contribution to hospital by each student at Mt. Meru Regional Hospital is US$50 per week.
All other hospitals within the Arusha Municipality and Moshi charge US$100 for 2-4 weeks, with every additional week charged at US$25.
The Tanzania Immigration Authorities require a fee of USD$200 for Carrying on Temporary Assignment (CTA Stamp) in addition to the hospital fees, applicable for a maximum of 8 weeks placement.
The Elective Africa fee contribution to Hospital by each student is US$125 per placement.
Malindi Sub-county Hospital requires that each participant pays for a temporary permit of Kes 15,000, which translates to US$195 together with processing fees. At this hospital, there is no additional fee. The Nursing Council in Kenya requires all nursing participants to pay a registration fee of US$50 for students and US$100 for registered nurses.
At Elective Africa to enhance transparency we prefer that each participant pays for these hospital fees and work permits upon arrival apart from the Malindi work permit and the nursing council registration fees which have to be processed in advance.
Our healthcare placements are accompanied by a supervisor who will be your to go to person at the hospital. The placements are structured to ensure you get value for your time at the institution. You will have an opportunity to have a one on one sitting with one of the supervisors during your healthcare program and he will be able to talk to you more on the hospital placement and answer any questions that you may have.
You will also benefit from our flexible placements since we can place you at any time of the year.
You will be assigned a staff member to work with you as soon as you sign up to assist you with all the information that you need to process your healthcare placement. You can call them, email them, text them and they will always be on standby to answer your queries.
This includes helping you answer questions from your placement coordinators in your respective schools, filling in the required forms, helping you get a feel of the place where you will spend your rotation. Ask them anything that is bugging you and they will have the answer to your queries.
Once on program, you have round the clock support, which includes our program coordinators and housekeepers who when not within the residence, are only a phone call away.
Your assigned staff has vast information about the area you will be placed therefore once you are settled into your new temporary home, he will give you and/or your group an orientation to get you familiar with your new environment. We will also introduce you to your assigned mentor and some of the people you will be working and interacting with during your placement.
Swahili being among the most spoken and national language in some of our program locations such as Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, we assign someone to offer free lessons twice a week at our residence. This will enable you to easily fit into the community that you are working in, as you have a basic understanding of the local language.
Arriving in a new and strange country can be overwhelming and that is why we have a staff waiting for you at least 30 minutes before your arrival at whichever time you land. Thus you have no reason to worry about your check-in time.
We offer free airport pickups in the following locations:
• Mombasa: From Moi International Airport (MBA)
• Nairobi: From Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)
• Kisumu: From Kisumu International Airport (KIS)
In case you land in an airport that is not within the program location you will be received by our program coordinator but you will cater for your transfer to the residence. This is applies in the following locations:
• Arusha and Moshi: From Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
• Migori: From Jomo Kenyatta Internationa Airport (JKIA) or Kisumu International Airport (KIS)
• Malindi: From Moi International Airport (MBA)
Depending on the time and airport of arrival, you will either be taken directly to one of EA residences or you may have to spend a night in a hotel and then begin the trip to our location the next morning. At the end of your program you will also be accompanied to the airport.
Accommodation: This is the place that you will call home for a duration of 4 weeks or more thus we endeavor to provide you with a homely and relaxed environment. The rooms are shared between 2 to 4 people depending on the size of the room. This design is meant to provide an atmosphere of sharing, interaction and socializing, while also providing adequate room for personal time and space.
Security is paramount to us, hence our houses are located in very secure neighborhoods and we have security staff all round the clock.
Meals: You will be provided with two cooked meals, lunch and dinner and also a fresh and hearty breakfast, which will have milk, cereals, fruits and eggs. Fresh drinking water is always in constant supply.
We will regularly arrange for a barbecue to unwind after a busy week at the hospital. Do you have special dietary requirements? Worry not. Our chef has you covered.
Laundry Services: Placements can be quite busy as you will have a lot of activities going on during the week and the weekends. Thus once every week, hand washed laundry services will be offered to you. This will save you the hustle and ensure that you have less in your plate to worry about.
Every morning we provide transport as a group to the facility in which you will be placed and return to the residence. These are scheduled trips for which the hours are communicated to you by your program coordinator. While we endeavor to be flexible we only offer one round trip for the group doing its placement in the same facility. In a case where you would like to work extra hours our coordinator will have shown you how to get back to the residence during the local area orientation at your own cost.
Communication is very important to us and we believe it is also important to you. That is why we provide you with Internet access at the residence and a phone while on ground. This way you can keep in touch with family and friends back home and you can also reach us while on program. We therefore advise you to bring along your laptops and smart phones.
