This summer, Elective Africa had the pleasure of welcoming a diverse group of premedical and medical students to our Summer 2024 Internship Program in Mombasa, Kenya. Clinical Experience: Learning at the Heart of Healthcare

At the core of the Elective Africa internship program is the clinical experience. This summer, we welcomed a diverse group of students who joined our premedical, medical electives, physician assistant, and pre-physician assistant internship programs. Each participant brought unique objectives and interests to their program, seeking to explore various aspects of healthcare that aligned with their personal and professional goals.

Their journey started with a comprehensive hospital orientation at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, the largest and most respected healthcare institutions in the coastal region. During the orientation, interns were introduced to their mentors and hospital staff and toured the different departments. This initial exposure set the stage for their clinical rotations, allowing them to hit the ground running and maximize their learning experience from day one.

From shadowing seasoned doctors to engaging in ward rounds and participating in case discussions, our interns were exposed to a wide range of healthcare practices. The clinical rotations spanned departments such as emergency medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, and dentistry. During their rotations, students had the opportunity to work closely with experienced mentors who provided guidance, shared insights, and offered personalized advice on navigating the medical field.

The interns also participated in various different community outreach clinical camps including a Pediatric Heart Camp where they had the opportunity to shadow surgeons as they performed life-changing procedures. Participating in these outreach activities gave them a glimpse into how medical care can truly change lives.

To further enrich their experience, we also organized weekly global health tutorial sessions that provided a broader perspective on the healthcare systems and challenges faced in Kenya and Africa at large, particularly in resource-limited settings.

Cultural Immersion: Embracing Local Traditions

Beyond the clinical setting, we ensured that our interns experienced and embraced the rich culture of Mombasa. One of the first stops of the cultural immersion experience was a guided city tour of Mombasa, where the interns explored the city’s iconic landmarks and learned about its rich history and cultural significance. From the ancient Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to the bustling Old Town with its narrow streets and Swahili architecture, the tour offered a deep dive into the unique blend of African, Arab, and European influences that have shaped Mombasa over the centuries.

To help our interns connect more deeply with the local community, we offered weekly Swahili lessons. These classes provided them with a deeper understanding of Swahili culture and the local way of life, while also teaching them basic phrases.

Additionally, a visit to the Bombolulu Cultural Centre was arranged, where interns had the opportunity to witness traditional dance performances, explore local crafts, and learn about the efforts to support and empower people with disabilities in the community. This visit highlighted the resilience and creativity of the local culture.

Elective Africa also ensured that participants had opportunities to give back to the local communities as we believe in leaving communities we work in better than we found them. Our interns visited schools and orphanages, where they volunteered their time and skills. Whether it was assisting with educational activities, organizing health talks, or simply spending time with the children, these experiences allowed our interns to make a meaningful impact and forge strong connections with the community.

Excursions: Adventures of a Lifetime

What is all work with no play? After intense weekdays of clinical rotations, weekends were a chance to unwind and explore some of the most breathtaking locations Kenya has to offer.

Their adventures kicked off with a visit to Haller Park, a remarkable nature reserve that has transformed a barren limestone quarry into a thriving ecological reserve. Next on the itinerary was a full day trip to the stunning Diani Beach, known for its turquoise waters and sandy white sands.

A full day excursion to the coastal towns of Malindi and Watamu, where they explored some of Kenya's most beautiful coastal towns was one of the highlights of their experience. The day started with a hike at Hell’s Kitchen, with its stunning rock formations and vibrant colors. Snorkeling in the vibrant waters of Watamu Marine National Park offered a glimpse into the underwater world viewing colorful coral reefs and marine life. To end the day, a visit to the ancient ruins of Gedi provided a fascinating insight into the Swahili culture, with its blend of African, Arab, and European influences.

Continuing their adventures, the interns visited Shimba Hills National Reserve, a lush and forested area where they hiked through dense vegetation and visited the spectacular Sheldrick Falls. Finally, the group visited the Nguuni Wildlife Sanctuary, a hidden gem in Mombasa where they enjoyed serene surroundings and close encounters with giraffes, ostriches, and other wildlife, providing a perfect and peaceful end to their adventures.
