1. Clinical Skills Enhancement One of the reasons healthcare students choose to undertake electives abroad is to earn school credits for their placements. At Elective Africa, our medical internship program offers practical, hands-on experience in various departments within the healthcare facilities where we place students. These facilities encompass a range of departments, including internal medicine, maternity (obstetrics and gynecology), surgery, casualty/emergency or minor theater, pediatrics, and the dental unit, among other areas of interest.
Coast General Hospital in Mombasa, Kenya, is one of the hospitals we have partnered with for over two decades. This location holds a special place in the hearts of many participants who have returned due to the invaluable experiences they've gained on the ground. Participants have the opportunity to enhance their clinical skills, adapt to different healthcare environments, and acquire new techniques or procedures that may not be commonly practiced in their home country.
2. Cultural Exposure The world we live in today involves the global movement of populations, where people are relocating to new areas either due to conflicts or in search of new opportunities. We now live with people from different cultures and a need to offer medical services to all these different demographics.
Choosing to do a medical internship abroad can be a great opportunity to learn how to interact with people from different backgrounds, and understand how to navigate their world while offering much-needed medical services. This will help one develop cultural sensitivity and empathy. Working in different cultural contexts exposes you to diverse healthcare systems, practices, and challenges which help you develop a more holistic approach to patient care. 3. Safaris and Adventure Why travel all the way and not take a chance to do excursions, and discover the history of the location where you are placed? Take on a safari, to the world-famous Maasai Mara or Serengeti, or if you are an ardent hiker, a chance to scale up the tallest Mountain in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro. All these are opportunities you get when you give yourself a chance to explore beyond your borders. Picture yourself immersed in a new country, navigating vibrant markets, tasting exotic cuisines, and exploring breathtaking landscapes. 4. Global Perspective A medical internship abroad provides you with the opportunity to build a professional network with healthcare experts abroad. It is also an opportunity to hear about their training experiences and gain new mentors in the medical field. This allows you to meet people whom you can reach out to as you continue your career in healthcare delivery, as well as fellow medical internship participants from around the world who can give you valuable insights, collaborations, and future career opportunities.
One of our best placement times includes summer (May to August) and over the spring (January to March) where you have a chance to meet a lot of participants from different schools, and countries and pursue different courses in the healthcare field.
5. Diverse Learning Environment By participating in a medical internship with Elective Africa, you can gain firsthand experience in diverse cultural contexts, healthcare systems, and unique challenges. This immersive experience broadens your understanding of global healthcare and empowers you to develop a more comprehensive approach to patient care. Elective Africa provides tailored placements in different locations, allowing you to explore a variety of healthcare settings and gain a well-rounded global perspective and the opportunity to learn and grow in real-world medical settings while acquiring practical skills that will benefit your future career.
6. Personal Growth By challenging yourself to embrace a different healthcare system, you'll develop resilience, adaptability, and problem-solving skills. Stepping out of your comfort zone widens your perspective on life and shapes you into a culturally aware healthcare professional. This transformative experience with Elective Africa will empower you to provide more compassionate and effective care as you interact with patients from diverse backgrounds. Interacting and learning from medical professionals and fellow interns will also help you thrive as a well-rounded healthcare professional.
